Last month pupils from both Whiteabbey Primary and Ulidia Integrated College worked together with the Ulster Wildlife Trust to litter pick in the area around Carrickfergus Castle.

During the event pupils learnt about plastic waste in our oceans – Did you know that a plastic bag will take up to 1000 years to biodegrade, during this time it can be very harmful to marine wildlife as animals mistake it for food and eat it which can kill them.

The pupils worked together as a team to remove a mixture of rubbish which included a tyre, plastic bottles, plastic containers, paper waste and sea glass which was removed by the adults. During the event over three bags of waste were removed and disposed of professionally by ISL recycling.

During the event it was good to see pupils from one of our feeder primary schools enjoying the activity with us and learning how to litter pick and how to use the equipment from the older students. It was also lovely to see the two sets of pupils making friends and working together as a team.
