Ulidia Students Take Part in Euro Quiz at Belfast City Hall

Organised by Belfast City Council, the European Commission Office in Northern Ireland and NICILT, the first Opportunity Europe quiz took place in the City Hall on Tuesday 21st April.

Patrycja, Leanne, Abbie, Leah, Niambh and Aaron competed against students from 11 schools from Belfast, Newcastle, Holywood and Bangor. They answered questions on geography, music, daily life and culture, faces and places, European languages and food and drinks.

Sounds easy?

It was not!

Our students were fantastic and finished in 5th place! Leah, who was Captain, was the first to win a ‘spot prize round’, where she had to answer yes/no questions without actually saying yes or no!

For Guy Spence, Belfast Deputy Lord Mayor, the quiz was “about fun, working as a team, and learning what Europe stands for.” He wished all participants to go away “excited about Europe and looking for opportunities.”

And that’s what our students did. They came back enthusiastic about the opportunities Europe has to offer and delighted they had taken part in this challenging but amazing competition. Aaron said, “I’ve had a lot of fun and I learned new stuff about Europe.” As for Year 8 student Leanne, what she enjoyed the most was, “meeting new people from different parts of the country.”

Colette Fitzgerald, Head of the European Commission office in Northern Ireland, inspired our young people and reminded them that they are all “citizens of the European Union. They are the future of Europe. They are the ones who will be making the decisions.”

Our students fully enjoyed this event which promoted greater intercultural awareness and appreciation of one’s own culture and language.
