On Friday 15th April, thirteen Silver Duke of Edinburgh students started their practice expedition. They arrived at Meelmore Lodge and set up their tents before they trekked along the Trassey Track and climbed up to Hare’s Gap. They were in great spirits and the weather was clear and bright. After lunch in true mountain style, the weather completely changed and a heavy drizzle reduced visibly significantly. Students waited patiently until it cleared and when ready they carefully started their descent.

Early on Saturday, the Silvers awoke to snow on the mountain tops and a touch of frost all around. They worked tirelessly together to make themselves hot breakfasts before they walked from Meelmore to Tollymore Forest. To access the forest they crossed a few rivers and again team work was of the utmost importance. They navigated around Tollymore, taking care of their environment. By late afternoon they had collected bags of litter, spotted red squirrels, dodged hail stone showers, crossed numerous bridges and rescued distressed calves. All in a day’s work for our Silver Duke of Edinburgh students, ensuring they are ready for their exam expedition on Thursday 28th April.
