On Wednesday 22nd June, Ulidia Integrated College held our annual Green Day event. Green Day is a whole day of environmental activities for students in KS3 which aims to promote environmental responsibility on a local, national, and global scale.
During the day pupils from KS3 enjoyed a range of activities which included a beach clean, visit from The Wildlife Trust, and a visitor from Madagascar. Students used skills such as numeracy, literacy, and creativity. Some pupils were given the opportunity to use fair trade ingredients to make cookies, others were recycling bottles into bird feeders and some students got to meet a starfish! ISL recycling who Ulidia works with to maintain our zero waste status visited to show students where school waste goes and how it is recycled. Many pupils took part in a beach clean, where they collected seven large bags of litter from our local beaches.
The highlight of the day was a birds of prey display from the Northern Ireland school of Falconry. Students watched as John introduced Falcons, Owls, Buzzards and allowed the birds to fly over the pupils.
Another highlight of the day was the wacky boot competition. Students used their creative skills to decorate old wellies as creatively as they could.
During the day pupils were rewarded for extra efforts with prizes that were donated from local businesses such as the Gobbins, Carrickfergus Castle, W5, and Lidl. The Spar on Victoria Road kindly donated apples for pupils to have a healthy snack once they had completed their litter picking.
