Professor Boyd Travel & Tourism Visit

On Thursday 12th October Travel and Tourism learners were visited by Professor Boyd from the Ulster University.

Professor Stephen Boyd gave an overview of his background; Professor Boyd gained a degree in Geography from Queens then moved to Canada to gain a Master and PhD in Geography. Returned to NI in 2004 to take up a professor post within the Ulster University.

Professor Boyd explained that the travel and tourism sector is currently employing 108 million people within the UK which is more than many other sectors and contributed 30% of global GDP. In 2016 £851 million was spent by tourists in Northern Ireland alone. The tourist industry is certainly a lucrative and interesting industry to go into!

Professor Boyd gave learners an overview of courses available within the Ulster University in the area of Travel and Tourism. Learners were especially interested to learn about the placement year in the third year of the degree which can be taken either in Northern Ireland or internationally in businesses such as Disney in America.
Learners left the talk more informed about their options and with renewed aspiration to study at third level.
