03 Jun Girls Football Tournament
On Thursday 30th May Ulidia Year 8 & 9 girls competed in their first outdoor football tournament at Mallusk football pitches. With the school bus packed up and ready to go with two teams captained by Nicole McDonnell and Josie Shearer we made our way up to the competition – singing loudly on the way!
With the sun shining the girls didn’t hesitate on getting stuck into a warm up and several drills (whilst still singing) waiting for the opponents to arrive.
Several other schools started arriving as the girls looked on nervously trying to find out which was which… Downshire, Larne and Ballyclare are only some of which were in our category. Everyone hyped up with excitement (and sweeties) our first match was delayed due to Cullybackey failing to arrive – rumour has it Daisy Buick scared them away!
Eventually getting the matches started both teams played extremely well learning new aspects of the game – such as keeping shape and staying in space. All the girls played together as a team passing well and with two rookie goalkeepers Marianna Kivonova and Rachel Lockyear making some excellent saves and commanding the defenders where to go. Our captains were both well organised and helped inspire their teams throughout the matches motivating all the girls and keeping the team spirit high. Kyna Ku was fantastic throughout the tournament making a great improvement in tackling and getting the ball to the forward players.
As the tournament came to an end all the girls exhausted from running their legs off, singing and dancing, we played one last match against each other with it ending as a draw. The girls celebrated the end of the day with some pyramid making and rolling around in the grass!
