Author of the Week

This week we’re starting a series of publications of work produced by our students during exam week. We’ve been spoiled for choice – and this week’s award goes to Andrew in Year 11, who wrote a speech about a man who inspires him: Sir David Attenborough.

Congratulations Andrew!

Today I’d like to talk to you about someone who is very special to me and someone who has always inspired me to do great things, not only for myself but for the world we live in and cherish so dearly.

Since I was a young boy nothing has truly inspired me more than nature, nothing gets me out of bed like the thought of the beautiful world that shines around us on a daily basis. This is why David Attenborough inspires me. Not only does he tell the world about wildlife and planet Earth, he speaks of the importance to keep our planet blue, as it is dying slowly. David Attenborough has been incredibly lucky throughout the entirety of his life, seeing many people and many beautiful places that even a distinguished writer could not properly do justice to.

I look up to this incredible person as he has lived the life and believed the wonderful ideas I have so whole-heartedly fought for…  and breathes  life into projects to help save our planet, fuelling the minds of all who watch him. He also has a wonderful voice that not only makes you think, but educates you on all the fantastic and dazzling sights and sounds of the world,  even further making you think of the importance of the subject.

I’m sure all of you when you were younger wanted to be a fireman or policeman and even some of you wanted to do something a little more complicated but for me, ever since I could say the word, I wanted to be a zoologist. Of course when I was younger I pronounced it “zeeloist” but my intent was the same: to help the ecosystem and the animals that dwell within it.

I have always stared in complete and utter amazement at how beautiful this fantastic world can be but also I could see the cruel aspect of it and knew there was a lot of help to be given if we were ever to be able to save it from its current course. This is the main reason why I look up to this wonderful man; not only has he given his time and effort into everything he can do to help animals and the environment but he has raised millions in funds throughout his life for amazing causes such as WWF, which on a daily basis saves all sorts of animals such as pandas, lions, tigers and even whales.

I myself have donated money and plan to become a monthly sponsor of many animals and soon I will be of age to become a volunteer for animals overseas in places like Beirut and Bengal to help save the Bengal tiger and other important cat species. This important help was inspired by the actions of amazing people such as David Attenborough.

So in conclusion David Attenborough has not only changed and persuaded my decisions and actions for the better, he has also inspired me to tell other people about the amazing things that we as individuals can do.
