On Tuesday 4th October, the Eco Team were visited by Neil McMullan who is a parent of two members of the team and a local bird watching enthusiast.
The team learnt about gulls around the school grounds and how to identify them during the session. The common gull is small with yellow legs and beak. The black headed gull has black spots on its head at this time of year as it will have its winter coat on. It has red legs and during the summer it will have a black head. The herring gull has pink legs; the greater black-backed gull has yellow legs and is a large bird.
Mr McMullan brought with him a stuffed gull so that students could see what the gull looks like close up and touch its feathers.
During the bird watching session the group saw:
- Black headed gulls – 14
- Herring gulls – 1 and 5 juvenile gulls
- Magpies – 6
- Hooded crows – 4
- Jackdaws – 1
Students then learnt that in nature animals can be different, just like in the human world! The group saw one Jackdaw which had white specks on its tummy which is unusual as it’s usually black.
The group would like to say a big thank you to Mr McMullan for visiting us and teaching us about the different types of gulls that are regularly found on the school grounds.
