On Monday 6th February, a number of Year 11 GCSE History Students were invited to mark and remember Holocaust Memorial Day 2017 at Carrickfergus Council. The theme was ‘How can life go on’. The day began with a visiting speaker, Mr Billy Kohner. His family had fled Nazi persecution in Czechoslovakia during World War 2. They arrived in Northern Ireland and later set up a children’s clothing store. He told of his parents and grandparents lives in Czechoslovakia and how they had changed with the appointment of Adolf Hitler. There were two dramas showing people leaving their home towns and looking back on the events that shaped their lives now.
After these presentations the pupils attended two workshops looking at how the Jewish people must have felt and how people today still flee their homes following persecution. The pupils and staff thought the day was extremely thought provoking, well organised and a chance to remember those who lost their lives.
