10 Mar Kerry’s Story
My name is Kerry Telfair and I attended Ulidia from 2000-2005.
My parents instilled in me from an early age to respect everybody’s religious beliefs, even if they are different from my own. My parents had a mixed marriage so I think their decision to send me to an integrated primary and secondary school was always a no-brainer, so to speak.
Attending both an integrated primary and secondary school I was given the chance to mix with children that had I attended a segregated school, I would never have met.
Integrated education taught me, with the support of my parents, to respect everybody’s religious beliefs, sexual orientation etc something I have taken with me right throughout my life and into the work place.
In a country that is still deeply divided by religion I think that educating children from all religious backgrounds together in the same classroom is crucial. We don’t have children of our own yet however I am confident that they will also be educated in an integrated school.
