On Friday 24th March, KS3 pupils (Years 8, 9 and 10) participated in a thematic teaching day to celebrate integrated education. Pupils participated in activities in their lessons which were based on the topic of our local/global community.

In Home Economics learners explored origins of ingredients both local and global to and made an apple crumble with apples from Armagh and Cinnamon from Sri Lanka to emphasise the coming together of local and global elements. Within ICT learners made movies about integration using the ‘Movie Maker’ programme. Within RE learners examined the religions within Northern Ireland and used data to draw graphs to show how the population of Northern Ireland has changed over time to now include a diversity of religions within the region.

When pupils went to Science they explored harmony in nature and made posters to display their learning. In Music learners watched a film called ‘Landfill Harmonic’ to give them an insight into a world which is very different from their own, this enabled learners to develop an understanding of the world and to become more aware of what it means to be a global citizen.

English classes explored a poem called ‘Flag’’ which led to pupils designing a flag to represent themselves and their story to date such as their values and important moments in their life.

This was a whole school effort to provide this positive and exciting day for our pupils, to celebrate integrated education and we very much hope that all pupils enjoyed the day.
