Eco Team 2014/2015 conducts Environmental Review

The Ulidia Eco Team has been running for several years and is run by Mrs. Patterson, this photo shows the members of the Eco team 2014-15.

On Friday 3rd October the Eco team conducted their annual environmental review.  It was a very wet day but the rain didn’t dampen their spirits!

The whole school was reviewed; the team investigated waste, water, energy, global dimension, litter, school grounds, biodiversity, and transport. The review was very thorough.

The team found the following results:

  • Waste –  Ulidia Integrated College is the only zero waste post primary school in Northern Ireland, we are very proud of this status.
  • Water – We have a grey water system in the school.
  • Energy – Our turbine is a wonderful resource, but we would love to increase our energy production by ading solar panels.
  • Global Dimension – It was felt the Kenya project needs to be reinstated this year with more focus and attention.
  • Litter – Our school has very little litter, which is wonderful.
  • School Grounds – Our grounds are lovely.  Each year we brighten them up on ‘Green Day’.  We would like to add some raised beds to the front of the school.
  • Biodiversity – Our bird boxes were wonderful last year, we are really pleased with the videos and photos of the birds visiting the boxes.
  • Transport – we would like to involve year 9 in a Translink Travel Project this year.

The team includes students from every year in the school, and is led by the chairperson; Ivan Buick in year 13 (missing from photograph). The chairperson was voted as the leader by the students of the team.

This term the team are focusing on promoting fair trade products throughout the school, and are planning a gum litter reduction programme. We look forward to seeing all their hard work in action.

The team meets every Thursday lunctime in GG2, everybody in the school is welcome to join, contact Mrs. Patterson for more details.
