Earlier this month the eco team held a learning session about local geology. The session was planned at the request of the members who wanted to understand more about their local geology of the Antrim Coast.

Members of the team brought rock samples collected from Drains Bay on family walks in the area. Mr McMullan who is Ryan and Matt’s dad and Dr McClean from our science department came along to help explore the rocks and investigate their properties.

Learners used acid to look for evidence of calcium carbonate in the rocks. The rocks were split to show a ‘fresh surface’ to help investigate the mineral composition of our local geology.

The eco team were fascinated to hear the history of the rocks and to find out about our tectonic history in this region.

Thank you to Dr McClean and Mr McMullan for this enjoyable and fascinating learning experience.
