Ulster Schools Track and Field Championships

Ulster Schools Track and Field Championships

After her success at the NEBSSA’s, winning two gold and one silver medal and also two gold medals at the districts, Erin Maguire from 9OWN attended the Ulster Schools Track and Field Championships on Saturday 21st May. Erin was competing in both the 100m and High Jump.

Kicking off the morning for Erin was the semi-final of the 100m and she easily qualified for the final. Erin was up against very tough opposition and the times reflected this.

High Jump next and Erin opted out of the beginning heights and entered the competition around 1m 25cm. Jump after jump the girls cleared until the field was whittled down to 3 competitors including Erin. The bar was raised to 1m 39cm and all three managed to clear it. Although Erin has cleared 1m 48cm as her personal best she didn’t quite manage it today. Erin was equal 2nd in height at 1m 42cm but on count back she was placed 3rd.

The final of the 100m saw Erin also placed 3rd with the winner setting a new championship record of 12.98 seconds which is incredible for a 13 year old girl.

Although Erin qualified in High Jump for the all Ireland finals, the event is not part of the Irish set up in her age group. Ulidia are extremely proud of Erin’s achievements. Most pupils go to the Ulster’s and come away with nothing but to achieve two bronze medals in her first attempt is nothing short of amazing! Well done Erin! We are looking forward to seeing you grow in the sport of athletics.
