Introduction and Ethos
In Ulidia we are committed to preparing our students for the world of work and we encourage our students to develop the skills needed for local and global employment markets.
Careers Education is delivered once per fortnight to all pupils from year 10 up to year 14.
This Careers programme is complemented by the teaching of Employability for one term in year 8 to year 10. In years 11-12, Employability is taught through the GCSE Learning for Life and Work.
Additionally, year 12 students engage in a week of work experience in the Autumn term and a day of Employability and Interview skills workshops, followed by a mock interview with a member of our local businesses community. Year 13 students also avail of a week of work experience in the Summer term.
Throughout their years at Ulidia, pupils benefit from presentations delivered by former students now in Further/Higher Education and in Employment and from a variety of professionals from our business community.
At key transition stages, when choosing GCSE subjects in Year 10, A Levels in Year 12 and when considering third level education, we offer parents and students personalised, individual guidance to help them make informed and appropriate decisions.
The Carrickfergus Learning Community organises a Careers Convention every March that all our year12 students attend, getting the opportunity to speak directly to training providers, Further and Higher Education representatives and recruiters from a wide range of sectors in Northern Ireland and further afield.
We work closely with the Department for the Economy and all year 12 students have an interview with Mr Nicholl, our DfE Careers Advisor, who offers individual Personal Career Planning and attend Annual Reviews. Mr Nicholl also attend both the year 10 and year 12 options afternoons and provide information to parents on an individual basis.
Sixth Form Students are offered guidance and support by designated members of staff who act as mentors on making applications to Further and Higher Education during discrete Careers Lessons and during one-to-one guidance sessions. Presentations are arranged allowing visiting University representatives to share information and all students have the opportunity to attend the University of Ulster and Queen’s University Open Days, along with the Northern Ireland UCAS convention. Sixth form students also have the opportunity to have a follow-up appointment with Mr Nicholl from DfE.
