BTEC LEVEL 1/LEVEL 2 FIRST AWARD

Course Outline

 

It has been designed primarily for young people aged 14 to 19 who may wish to explore a vocational route throughout Key Stage 4, but it is also suitable for other learners who want a vocationally focused introduction to this area of study. It has been developed to:

  • give learners the opportunity to gain a broad understanding and knowledge of the health and social care sector
  • give learners a more focused understanding of health and social care through the selection of optional specialist units
  • give learners the opportunity to develop a range of personal skills and techniques, through the selection of units that are essential for successful performance in working life
  • give opportunities for learners to achieve a nationally recognised level 1/level 2 health and social care qualification
  • support progression into a more specialised level 3 vocational or academic course or into an apprenticeship.

This course is taught over 120 guided learning hours.  It has core and optional specialist units.

The course is made up of the following units, one of which is externally assessed:

 

Core Units at Ulidia 

Unit 1 – Human Lifespan Development – Externally assessed (25% of final award)

Unit 2 – Health and Social Care Values – Internally assessed (25% of final award)

Students will also be offered the following optional specialist units: 

Unit 5 – Promoting Health and Well Being – Internally assessed (25% of final award)
Unit 3 – Effective Communication in Health and Social Care – Internally assessed (25% of final award)

 


Assessment

Assessment will consist of:
-Assignment work (including posters, PowerPoint and role play)
-Video evidence
-Witness statements
-External examination
-Internal verification

BTEC LEVEL 3

This BTEC Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care provides the underpinning knowledge to act as a robust introduction to the Health and Social Care sector. This course will prepare learners for employment in this sector or for higher education as it provides robust opportunities for learners to gain knowledge and understanding of a wide range of subject areas relating to health and social care. The variety of units taught enable learners to focus on a sector of particular interest or relevance to them, whilst the unendorsed pathway enables those learners who are unsure of potential career pathways to gain a more general health and social care qualification.

 

There are 6 internally assessed units over the two year course:

Unit 1: Developing Effective Communication in Health and Social Care
Unit 2: Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care
Unit 3: Health, Safety and Security in Health and Social Care
Unit 4: Development Through the Life Stages
Unit 10: Caring for Children and Young People
Unit 20: Promoting Health Education

A Level

OCR A Level HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE

 

This A Level course provides a more vocational perspective and offers students the chance to obtain a qualification that meets both their individual aptitudes and interests. This course prepares students to enter a variety of courses in Health and Social Care and related subjects. It also provides a progression route for further training whilst in employment due to: the development of knowledge and understanding of issues affecting the health and social sector and the development of skills that will enable them to make an effective contribution to the care sector.

 

In Year 13 pupils will complete two internally assessed units:
Unit F911: Communication in Care Settings
Unit F912: Promoting Good Health.

 

One externally assessed unit will be completed at the end of Year 13:
Unit F910: Promoting Quality Care

 

In Year 14 pupils will complete two internally assessed units:
Unit F919: Care Practice and Provision
Unit F923: Mental Health Issues

 

One externally assessed unit will be completed at the end of Year 14:
Unit F920: Understanding Human Behaviour and Development
